Nutrition Tips While Sick

The weather changing can bring on great things such as pumpkin spice lattes, leaves on the trees changing to fall colors and the start of the holiday season. However, as the weather gets colder and kids go back to school, we enter… the dreaded… cold season.

Colds can be tough and have you feeling run down. Therefore, focusing on some essential nutrition tips can help you recover from your cold.

First things first, make sure you’re drinking! When you’re sick with a cold, you might not feel like eating or drinking and risk for dehydration increases because of that. Dehydration will only make matters worse, therefore it’s best to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Any type of liquid including water, electrolyte/sports drinks, coffee, teas, juice, soda or carbonated water will help combat dehydration.
Second, aim to include some fruits and vegetables into your meals. All fruits contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that your body needs and can provide a nutrient boost when you’re sick.

Lastly, remember when you were young and whenever you were sick your mom asked if you wanted chicken noodle soup? Well, it’s true, moms do know best. Soup, like traditional chicken noodle, contains protein, calories and electrolytes to help keep you nourished and hydrated to combat the cold you’re fighting. If chicken noodle soup isn’t your first choice, any soup will help as it counts as a liquid and keeps you hydrated. If you’re watching sodium intake then be sure to choose the lower sodium options that are offered.
